Is grocery store seafood fresh?

There are times of the year when there is no “fresh” Alaskan salmon, as it is out of season. So what about the salmon in grocery store display cases that is thawed and looks “fresh”? That fish has previously been frozen, and we encourage you to ask the following questions before buying it:

  • How old is your fish on the day you plan to purchase it?
  • Where was it caught?
  • Which boat caught your fish?
  • Which method was used to catch the fish?
  • How long has this fish been thawed in the case and why was it even thawed to begin with?
  • How many times has your fish been handled?

More than likely, you won’t receive answers to all of these questions from your grocery store clerk. However, when you buy directly from the fishermen, these questions and more can be answered!

We think it’s important to know where your food comes from. Our fearless leader Joe and his crew are part of the fishermen group that catch the wild Alaskan sockeye salmon for all of our salmon products. This makes our salmon “fishermen-direct”.

Kwee-Jack fishermen believe you should have access to information about when, where and how your fish was caught. Your dollars matter, and we want to be a part of making it easy to put quality protein on your table. If you agree that it is your right to know where your food comes from and how it was handled, then we’ve got you!

We believe choosing to buy directly from a farmer, rancher or supplier who can answer these questions is more important than simply choosing products based on price.
